This web page is an online copy of the Goodner Family Book researched, written, and published by Mr. Herbert W. Lacey. I take no credit whatsoever for his efforts in any way, and I am proud to claim relation to such a man as Mr. Lacey. The only credit I take for myself is the rather pedestrian efforts involved in scanning the book into Word 2000, proofing my work, and publishing this page. All credit goes to Mr. Lacey for his efforts in researching our family, and every Goodner owes him a debt of gratitude. This web page is my attempt to pay him back for his work.

Navigating the Site -
There are several distinct sections in this web site, and as a navigational aid, I have included a brief description of each.
This Web Site -
The section of the menu bar entitled This Web Site deals with this web page itself. It contains the following information:
Introduction - This contains information about the web site itself, such as who wrote it, how it came to be constructed, and general information about the web site.
Dedication - This is simply the dedication of the site.
Guest Book - This is a pretty standard Guest Book. You are more than welcome to provide feedback here about the site or simply email me at jgoodner@charter.net.
FAQ - This is a Frequently Asked Questions page about the web site, the Goodner family generally, and the Goodner Family Book.
My Family - This is a section of old photographs and scans of old documents related directly to my immediate family and not part of the Goodner Family Book at all.
Necrology - This page is a Necrology of the members of my immediate family who have died since the Goodner Family Book was first published in 1960.
About Me - Information about Jay Goodner, the designer and author of the web site, but not the Goodner Family Book.
The Goodner Book -
The section of the menu bar entitled The Goodner Book is taken directly from the Goodner Family Book. It is the general information that Mr. Lacey included about the family and his researches.
System of Numbering - This explains the system of numbering used in the book for numbering generations and siblings within a generation.
Forward - This is the Forward to the Goodner Family Book.
To Those Honored Dead - This is a necrology of Goodner's and Goodner relations killed in combat. (I have included a hyperlink for Howard Goodner, who is mentioned in Stephen Ambrose's Wild Blue Yonder, and who is largely the topic of Thomas Childer's Wings of Morning.)
The Goodner Name - This is a brief explanation of the Goodner name and its origins.
European Origins - This explains the European origins of the Goodner Family.
The Immigrant Family - This section discusses the Guettener family, from whom we are all descended and their origins in the Palatinate / Rheinland-Pfalz part of western Germany.
Guilford Charge - This is a brief description of the area around Guilford County where the Guetterner's and many other Palatine Germans settled.
The Founders -
The section of the menu bar entitled The Founders is taken directly from the Goodner Family Book. These selections list the patriarchs and matriarchs of the Goodner family. Mr. Lacey arranged the book using the names of the founders as chapter headings; these selections reflect each of these chapters and list the descendants of each of the founders. I have not included links to them all here in the interest of saving space.
Miscellaneous -
The section of the menu bar entitled Miscellaneous is taken directly from the Goodner Family Book. It is a mixture of general information, not pertaining to any individual founder, that is located in the back of the book.
Appendix - This section deals a great deal with the Scherrer family, with whom the Guettener's intermarried, both prior to and after their arrival in America from Germany.
Copies of Old Letters - This is a general compilation of copies of old letters. Of particular interest are some written during the Civil War.
Bibliography - This section is the Bibliography of soures that Mr. Lacey used in his research.
Please note that this site is rather minimalist in its design and approach. You will not find here any rotating gifs, advertisements, stock tickers or crawls of any type. I have included some commonly used information on web sites, such as a hit counter, but apart from that, it is a pretty low-key Internet site. The value in this site is its content. I hope you are entertained and edified by what you find here. Thanks for visiting . . .
